EMV Compliance and Liability Shift Deadline- October 2020
For our retail clients, we know that EMV compliance is a top priority for your point of sale and fuel dispenser payment terminals. Guardian has years of experience and expertise in assisting our clients with their EMV related planning, equipment financing and equipment upgrades. You can rely on Guardian and Gilbarco Veeder Root products to get you compliant by the deadline.
What is EMV?EMV payments leverage a computer chip located on the front of each payment card to transmit data from the card to the card reader in your point of sale and dispenser payment terminal. This chip calculates a unique data packet for each transaction reducing the value of any data that can be stolen out of a payment system.
What Happens if I don’t upgrade to EMV or I miss the deadline?Failure to upgrade by the October 2020 deadline will result in any fraudulent card activity at your retail location being charged back to the retailer by the credit card issuer or processor. On the other hand, if you are EMV compliant by the October 2020 deadline, any fraudulent card activity at your retail location would be covered by the credit card issuer or processor. The liability shift protects the entity who offers the greater level of security by holding the other entity with less secure systems responsible for fraud.
